How Do You Become an Elite Soccer Player?

After a UNC vs. FSU women's soccer game, UNC Women's Soccer Head Coach Anson Dorrance stopped by to talk with some of our Captain Elite players.

Later in this blog, we will share this video interview with Coach Dorrance.

We get emails and phone calls frequently from our parents and players who ask for our advice on playing at a higher level in college soccer. What does it take? How do I get there? Where do I start?

At Captain Elite, we get one particular question over and over from our youth soccer players and parents. So why not ask one of the biggest experts in soccer coaching?

Coach Mike wanted our players to hear Coach Dorrance talk about what youth soccer players need to do to become truly elite players.

A lot of kids want to play Division 1 soccer. Hearing from the greatest Division 1 soccer coach of all time on how to get there is valuable advice.

What Coach Dorrance says will surprise some of you.

Look for the transcript at the end of the blog if you like to read :).

Here's the transcript of the video with Coach Dorrance.

Coach Mike: And that was a huge win!

Coach Anson: Basically what mike talks about regularly and obviously what Cam invested as well,  is basically if you guys want to be truly elite, you have to master the ball. So it's all about spending time with it.

And so the first thing that's gonna take you to your potential is if you absolutely love the ball. A part of loving it is learning to master it..so all the different elements, to try to figure out

ways to, I guess manipulate the ball is going to take you to another level. And then obviously loving the game itself. So if you love to play and you love the ball your game is going to keep improving because the best players of the route there have all those different

elements. They love the ball, love the game, and as a result, you can see them getting better and better and better.

And so tonight those are basically two of the top three teams in the country against each other so you saw a classic Clash of the Titans game. And obviously, it wasn't

like Florida State didn't have some chances, they did.

But the difference between them and us is we finished our chances and they didn't finish theirs, which gets back again to ball mastery

What I was chewing the girls out about at the half are two things. They are offsides too much and every shot we hit was hit with so much power it lacked accuracy and that again gets back to ball mastery.

We talk about this in practice all the time. We talk about good habits. The first habit

in finishing is low. The second habit is across the frame. And what was cool about both goals you saw...it was low and across the frame. And both those players in the first half stied a couple high over the goal and then we chew them out at the half about low and across the frame and sure enough those are the two goals that you saw from Ru Mucherera and from Pinto.

Coach Mike: And Izzy almost had a third goal. Almost.

All right, Coach, any special moment? Is there a special moment in that game? What about

when the buzzer went off?

Coach Anson: Oh you mean after we had won?

Coach Mike: The eruption. Yeah.

Coach Anson: Well, actually for me, with 24 seconds to go I felt pretty good that we were gonna win. Yeah. With one minute to go, I had scenarios in my mind where they were gonna tie it and win it in overtime. Yeah. But with 24 seconds to go, I felt you know what...I think we have a chance to win this game.

Coach Mike: Brooke. Guys, this is Brooke she's a Captain Elite kid from 2014.

Coach Anson: Wait till you see this kid playing. We are redshirting her this year but next year she'll get back on the field. One of the best players in the college game. And juggling the ball in and around goats. Her parents are goat farmers.

Coach Mike: She's like Chloe in Florida.

Coach Anson: But these are great questions. Any other questions?

Parent: I have a question. So all these girls are working on the skills challenges and some of them are difficult. And they certainly ran into some issues along the way and you know have

frustrations. Do you have anything to say about like persevering or how to like work through

some of those challenging times?

Coach Anson: Well, this is where the love of the ball comes in. The only way you become elite in this game is to fall in love with the ball. If they don't fall in love with a ball those frustrations are gonna cause them to quit. So they have to figure out a way to love the ball and love the game. If they love the ball and love the game they have the potential to have

a long career and obviously, players like the one who's just here. By the way last year she was one of the best college players in the country and what she did actually with Mike is she mastered the ball.

Coach Mike: Ru, come over here. Here's another one. Get some love. Guys the game-winning goal! Wooo!

Coach Anson: The first habit is what?

Ru Mucherera: Low.

Coach Anson: The second habit?

Ru: Across.

Coach Anson: There you go. She got them right and Pinto did too. What did I tell you guys

at the half?

Ru: Stop shooting it so hard. Over.

Coach Anson: Yes.

Thanks to Head Coach Anson Dorrance, Brooke Bingham, and Ru Mucherera for joining us and helping our players. Great advice!
